George Ralph Harrill was born on May 17, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Clyde and Ruby Harrill. He departed this life peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
George received his early education through the Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from East Technical High School in 1953. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Amador, Alaska, where he faithfully served as the private driver for the unit’s admiral for three years. George received an honorable discharge in 1956.
On May 23, 1959, George married the love of his life, Evelyn. From this loving union, they welcomed their son, Leonard. Together, they built a life centered on family, commitment, and love.
George was known throughout his life as a hardworking and dedicated man. He began his career with the City of Cleveland in the Maintenance Department and later joined the United States Post Office, where he served as a mail carrier until retiring in 1992. Never one to remain idle, George continued serving his community in Cleveland Heights, working with the police department, City Hall, and most proudly as a school crossing guard. The children he helped each day affectionately called him “Grandpa.” He was widely admired for his kindness, warm sense of humor, and deep love for family and friends.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, George enjoyed attending countless sporting events with his son, nephews, and friends. He supported and encouraged his son, nephews, and grandchildren in all their pursuits. A devoted Cleveland sports fan, he cheered passionately for his hometown teams. George also played as a pitcher on the Main Post Office softball team and was an accomplished bowler, holding the anchor position on his most recent team until just two years ago.
In his later years, George remained humble, grateful, and loving, even as dementia gradually affected his memory. He was surrounded by family who cared for him with compassion and dignity. His oldest granddaughter, Lisa, became his guardian angel, ensuring he received the care he deserved. Bill remained a constant companion, sharing stories and memories. Sharon, Kimmisha, Tiarra, Unique, and Siggy lovingly helped meet his daily needs. Even near the end, George often said, “Thank you, baby. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
George’s life was defined by compassion, strength, humor, and unwavering love for his family and community. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Evelyn. He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Leonard Harrill; six grandchildren, Lisa K. Harrill (Bill), Mannon Cooke (Harry), Owens V. Phillips, Bevan Harrill, Mikael G. Harrill, and Caitlyn Harrill; eighteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchild; one nephew, Gerald Franklin; a special niece, Sharon Cooper; and a host of relatives and friends.
