George, a devoted father, proud veteran, and man of many talents, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on September 8 in Richmond, Virginia, George lived a life defined by hard work, creativity, and an unwavering love for his family.
A veteran who served his country with honor, George carried the values of dedication and resilience into every aspect of his life. He was known for his gifted green thumb and his remarkable ability to make anything grow. His gardens were full of life and color—just like the care and attention he poured into those he loved.
George had a unique sense of style and a love for fashion and shoes. He stepped out with confidence and flair, always expressing himself boldly. He was happiest working with his hands and took pride in everything he did. Whether cooking a good meal, fixing cars, or tending the yards of neighbors and friends through his lawn care business, George believed in the value of a job well done.
A lover of loud music, good food, and time spent with family, some of George’s most treasured moments were spent on the lake—laughing, fishing, and enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the water. Those were the days when his heart felt most at home.
His strong work ethic was matched only by his generosity. He was always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, or teach someone something new.
George leaves to cherish his memory his children: George Bates Jr., Elizabeth Bates, Wendell (Dana) Bates, and Danille Bates; his beloved grandchildren: Aja Morris-Bates, Blake Bates, Abel Houston, Donavan Roper, Michael Lucas, Joseph Bates, Amir Wilson, and Brooklyn Bates-Boyd; and his siblings: Norman (LaFarn), Cynthia, Ava, Loretta, and Anthony.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his humor, his strength, and the love he shared so freely. His legacy lives on in the gardens he grew, the lives he touched, and the family who will continue to honor the remarkable man he was.
