Gertis Parker was born in Columbia, Alabama on April 6, 1913. She was the only child born to the late Myrtle Calhoun. She was raised by her grandmother and aunt. She was very close to her first cousins whom she felt were the siblings she didn’t have. Gertis maintained those relationships with her cousins until they all preceded her in death. She attended school in Columbia, however she didn’t finish as she had to work picking cotton and corn with her favorite uncle.
Gertis moved to Cleveland, OH, in 1942, with her daughter Ruby. She met Wilbert Parker and they were married and remained so until his death in 1984. She worked in the Garment and Linen industries until her retirement in 1980. Gertis had five children; her eldest son, L.T. Irvin preceding her in death.
Gertis accepted Christ at an early age, and she immediately found a church home. She later joined Open Door Missionary Baptist Church and was a member for over 65 years until her death. Gertis was very active in the church, singing in the choirs, serving on the Mother’s Board. and involved in other activities and committees until her health would not allow her too. Gertis also sung with the Choraliers Gospel Singers who travelled in and out of state singing praises to our GOD.
Fishing was Gertis’ favorite hobby and she fished until all her fishing buddies preceded her in death. Gertis also loved to travel and loved baseball. Her most favorite interest was her family. Gertis loved her family and loved being surrounded by her family at family gatherings. She had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. Family and others went to her for her impartment of her wisdom and advice. She lived through many historical events.
On July 20, 2022, Gertis departed this life at her home. She leaves to mourn her beautiful memories four children: Ruby Wysinger, Wilma Jean’ Parker, Althea Calhoun, and Melvin Parker (Linda), 12 living grand- children, over 30 great grand- children, over 50 great-great grandchildren and over 6 great-great-great grandchildren. Also, a special great-granddaughter, Ariana Calhoun, who was one of her caregivers, a special nephew Shawndale McGivens, a special play daughter Diane Gibson and a host of other relatives and friends.
