GLENNIE MAE (DAVIS) JOHNSON
On Thursday, April 24, 2025, Heaven received another angel when Glennie Mae Johnson, 92, transitioned.
Glennie was born on Friday, July 15, 1932, in Fairfax, Alabama to Glenn Dunn and Gertha Dunn Hicks. Glennie was the oldest of three children born to this union. Having spent her early years in Alabama, Glennie moved to Akron, Ohio in 1955.
Ben Joe Davis, Sr., was Glennie’s first husband, and they lovingly raised five beloved children: Eddie, Ben, Gertie Diane, Gregory, and Karl. Glennie was a dutiful homemaker who worked hard to create a warm and inviting home. With the love, support, and inspiration of her mother, aunts, and other strong family members, Glennie was able to thrive after she was widowed in 1966.
Fortune favored and smiled upon Glennie when, in September of 1984, she wed Charles H. Johnson Sr. The number of Glennie’s children grew from five to nine when her heart expanded to include sons Charles “Speedy” Jr. and Ian Don, and daughters Lisa and Kara.
Glennie’s love for her family was surpassed only by her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Glennie’s passion for and commitment to service was demonstrated by her involvement with the Mount Olive Baptist Church, where she was an active and faithful member for many decades until her health declined. She was a member of the choir, the Deaconess Board, and other ministries. Wherever there was a need, Glennie was eager to meet it.
She aspired to infuse joy, laughter, and fun from every moment, some of Glennie’s favorite past times included traveling, gardening, fashion, and cooking. You would have to search far and wide to find anyone who made a better banana pudding!
Welcoming Glennie on the other side of eternity are her parents Glenn and Gertha; husbands Ben Joe Davis, Sr and Charles H. Johnson, Sr; siblings Henry Dunn and Dorothy Arnwine; sister-in-law Mary Dunn; brother-in-law Marshall Arnwine; sons Gregory Davis, with whom she shared a birthday, and Karl “Toot” Davis.
Tenderly carrying on Glennie’s legacy of love and grace are her children, Eddie, Ben Jr., Diane, Charles Jr., Ian, Lisa, and Kara; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; goddaughter Jackie Cox-Young; special cousins Joseph James, James “Chipper” Bell, and Lorene Sampson; and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and loved ones.
