Gloria was born in Atlanta, GA on January 23, 1935, to Thelmon Wicker and Evelyn Lewis (Square). She was raised in Cleveland, Ohio then in 1964 moved her family to Ravenna. There she continued raising her 10 children and helped run her family’s confectionery store, shortly after she began her work for the Ravenna Public School System. Gloria provided educational support and nurturing to thousands of students and became a parent advocate.
Her volunteer services and community work started shortly after moving to Ravenna. Gloria was a volunteer for the Friendship House and a founding member of the Ravenna Head Start Program. In addition, she provided an avenue through starting the Letting Off Steam (LOS) program. LOS was an after-school program that provided mentoring to young students, gave attention to their concerns, provided support and guidance. She gave literacy tutoring to many Ravenna youth preparing them for employment and higher education. Gloria served as a member of the Ohio Black Women’s Leadership Caucus and received countless awards over the years but most notably was her Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ravenna area Chamber of Commerce.
Gloria received Christ at an early age. She had been a faithful member of Allen Chapel AME, Ravenna, Ohio for the past 40 years where she served as Treasurer. She was the founding member of the spiritual group, The Robinson Family Singers.
Gloria loved reading, western movies but most of all, spending quality time with her extended family. Hundreds of friends called her mommy, grandma or even aunt. It was easy for her to care. She often gave a listening ear, a warm hug, a piece of advice “take it or leave it” and often, a delicious meal. Gloria enjoyed a good hardy laugh that gave us all a friendly reminder to cherish and appreciate life.
Gloria was truly the matriarch of her family and a pillar in the community. She will be forever loved, honored and missed dearly by her family and friends.
1 John 4: 7-8 – Beloved, let us love one another for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God because God is Love.
