Hattie Mae Hammonds was born on October 29, 1941, in Gurley, Alabama, to the late Norman and Bessie Brown. She was the third oldest of thirteen children. Hattie was called to Glory on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
In 1966, Hattie relocated to Akron, Ohio, with her late husband, MacArthur Hammonds. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Wesley Temple AME Zion Church for many years.
Hattie was a dedicated homemaker who found joy in baking and caring for her children and grandchildren. Throughout her life, she held various jobs as a Home Health Aide. In her spare time, she loved to bowl and participated in several leagues. Hattie cherished spending time with her family, often expressing her spirited personality—she was known for being “sassy” and never biting her tongue. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Bessie Brown; her beloved husband, MacArthur Hammonds; six sisters, Ida, Sarah, Ruth, Vivian, Lillian, and Glenda; one brother, Mitchell; her son-in-law, Thomas Suddeth; and her cherished best friend/sister, Loverne Parrish-Rice.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: three daughters, Brenda, Aretha, and Valerie; one son, Arthur; her favorite son-in-law, Lamont; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Antoine), Tamara, William (Debbie), KeAnna, Marcus, Daimonte, and Terriana; eleven great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Michael Brown of Gurley, Alabama; three sisters, Katherine Byers of Gurley, Alabama, Juanita Brown of Cleveland, Ohio, and Wand (Calvin) Colley of Berkley, Alabama; Karen Brown of Hawaii; one uncle, Willie B. Gurley of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
