Hazel Marie Edwards was born on January 7, 1956, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she found a community that became her family.
Hazel was a vibrant soul who loved to explore the world and make special memories with those she loved. She had a passion for traveling to destinations all over the world and was particularly fond of Europe, Key West, Yosemite National Park, and Jamaica, where she felt most at home. Hazel had a natural curiosity and thirst for adventure, always seeking out new experiences and cultures to immerse herself in.
In Key West, she fell in love with the laid-back island vibes and colorful sunsets. In Yosemite National Park, she found peace and tranquility among the towering trees and majestic waterfalls. In Europe, she marveled at the stunning architecture, rich history, and diverse cultures that each country had to offer. And in Jamaica, she danced to the rhythms of reggae music, soaked up the sun on pristine beaches, and indulged in delicious jerk chicken and tropical fruit.
Hazel’s wanderlust and love for exploring extended beyond just solo adventures – she and her baby sister, Benita, shared a strong bond rooted in their mutual passion for discovering the world together. Their unbreakable connection was evident in the way they sought out new experiences, whether it be walking the streets of Savannah or indulging in the rich culture of Europe. They cherished each moment spent together, creating memories that would last a lifetime and solidifying their sisterly bond even further. From exploring new landscapes to savoring simple pleasures, Hazel and Benita made the most of every adventure, reveling in the vast playground that the world had to offer.
Hazel loved music and truly loved going to concerts. Among her favorite bands was The Dramatics—whose music always put a smile on her face and a pep in her step. Hazel also had a love for the arts and enjoyed attending plays with her children, Kellie and Ryan. Hazel cherished these moments spent with her children, bonding over their shared love of music and the arts. Whether they were belting out their favorite tunes at a concert or cranking up the music while doing household chores.
Hazel was strong, and resilient and never shied away from a challenge. She completed a master’s degree in Special Education and up until her retirement, worked tirelessly as a dedicated special education teacher in the East Cleveland Public School System.
Hazel’s strength and resilience extended beyond the classroom and into her personal life, where she selflessly cared for her aging mother, Pearlie Edwards, after retiring from her teaching career. Hazel embraced the role with unwavering dedication and love. Their bond only grew stronger during this time, as they shared cherished moments and found peace and contentment in each other’s company. Hazel’s commitment to her mother mirrored her commitment to her students, demonstrating her unwavering strength and compassion in all aspects of her life.
Hazel was passionate about serving her community and actively participated in local campaigns for candidates who shared her dedication to the community. She spent countless hours making phone calls and helping organize events to rally support for those whom she believed would make a positive impact. Hazel’s drive and determination inspired those around her to get involved and make a difference in their own neighborhoods. Hazel’s passion for serving others was not just a hobby, but a way of life that she wholeheartedly embraced.
Hazel’s passion for bringing joy to others through hosting events at her home was evident in everything she did. Whether it was organizing card parties with friends or planning trips to Amish Country in Pennsylvania, she always prioritized quality time with her loved ones. Hazel also had a compassionate heart, opening her home to anyone in need of support and offering a listening ear and comforting presence during difficult times. As a landlord in East Cleveland, she provided affordable housing to single mothers, further demonstrating her generosity and warmth. Hazel’s home truly became a sanctuary for many, embodying her caring and kind spirit.
The love and compassion Hazel had for her community radiated within her home. She cherished her children, Kellie and Ryan, and found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren – Jordan, Imani, and Nia.
She is survived by her beloved mother, Pearlie Edwards, her loving partner of more than 40 years, Lorenzo Boyce, as well as her siblings Linda Kight, Benita Edwards, Jonathan Edwards, and Herman Edwards.
Loved ones who have passed before her include siblings Flonzel Edwards, Gwendolyn McCain, Lawanna Hill, Tyrone Edwards, her loving grandmother, Addie Lee Bell, and her Father Herman Edwards.
Hazel’s kindness, strength, compassion, and unconditional love will be deeply missed but will live forever in the hearts of those whose lives she touched in so many remarkable ways.
May she rest in peace knowing she was truly loved and cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing and loving this incredible child of God.
