Re: Hilton Smith March 18, 2026
Dear Marsha & Family
I began working for Turner in 1971 in Cleveland and worked with Hilton for almost 4 decades. He is responsible for where I am today. In 1974 he was successful with helping Turner obtain a contract with the City of Detroit building a new Health Care Institute for Wayne State University and Detroit General Hospital. I was transferred from Cleveland to Detroit for this project. This began a long relationship with the City of Detroit and Mayor Coleman Young who loved the Turner Company and Hilton. I recall clearly when the Mayor asked us a simple question to help develop minority capacity in the community. We took this on as a commitment and developed the first Construction Management program for minority and women owned businesses. This became the model for other CM programs developed at Turner across the United States. This was not easy and we had to fight off local lawsuits who attempted to block our work to develop capacity. We successfully litigated all issues which helped build significant capacity in the Detroit area. 16 years later I was transferred to Pittsburgh to rebuild the office and used my skills learned from Detroit and Hilton. I will always be grateful to Hilton’s mentorship.
I loved Hilton like a brother and enjoyed working with him over the past 50 years. He made a lasting impression on many of us and will be remembered for this kindness and commitment to equality and opportunity for all.

Hilton Smith was one of the first people to welcome me into the Cleveland community, and I will always be grateful for his kindness. He offered thoughtful advice, led by example, and carried himself with a strength that left a lasting impression.
I came to know him not only as a respected professional but as a true friend and mentor. He always greeted me with a warm, genuine smile—one that made me feel seen and valued. That smile will always remain in my memory.

To The Hilton Smith Family
To God be the glory for all the great works that he did. You can truly say that his work can speak for him. Rest In Heaven Rev. Smith. You will be greatly missed.
Hilton was there for me when I started my Turner career over 40 years ago in Boston. He immediately became an informal mentor. He has help guide the careers of several of my friends that work or have worked for Turner and continued to be successful. He also instilled in me my duty to serve others. Wherever you went throughout the county when you told people you work for Turner they always asked if you knew Hilton Smith. He continued to me a person I could talk to after his retirement. As a young man in Turner at the start it was a blessing to see Hilton in his position with the corporation and provided us something to strive for. Thanks for all you did for us and the Country as a whole. Rest Well my Friend!
I worked with Hilton at Turner Construction Company starting in 1980 in Pittsburgh. He was a terrific help. Always a strong advocate to assist me in supporting the minority construction community to succeed on our projects. We continued our relationship for years in Columbus where he worked diligently to help us support the community. He was respected and valued as by everyone he touched..
"Praying for peace and comfort for your family. Although I didn't know Rev. Smith personally, his legacy as a well-known and well-loved leader in our community is an inspiration. May his soul rest in peace..
My prayers are with the family .
Praying for divine comfort and peace for your family.
Hilton was a friendly, outgoing neighbor. Always enjoyed brief chats when he was walking his dog. Our monthly gatherings for breakfast and stories was the highpoint of the last Wednesday of the month. Hilton kept us abreast of all the happenings in Cleveland. Surely he will be missed, but I know he is in a better place. My wife and I will pray for his family during this most difficult time.
