Born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland, Horace graduated from East Technical High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1960. During his time at Laredo Air Force Base, he joined a band called The Satellites, sharing his love of music and camaraderie with his fellow servicemen. While serving, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his dedication and exemplary performance. His time in the military shaped his character, instilling discipline, integrity, and a calm confidence that guided him throughout his life. After returning home, Horace worked in his parents’ furniture refinishing business, Horace Young’s Finishing Service, helping to continue and strengthen the family legacy. He became well-known for his craftsmanship, the care he put into every piece he restored, and the pride he took in his work.
Horace was also a longtime member of the Antioch Adult Ensemble, Antioch Baptist Church, where he shared his love of music and worship. His voice and presence added warmth and fellowship to the congregation, and his involvement in the choir remained a meaningful part of his life for many years.
Outside of his work and music, Horace found true joy in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, often taking hunting and fishing trips with friends. These moments allowed him to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures that brought him comfort.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Lee Young, his sister Betty Bridgewater, his brothers William Young and Robert Young (Theresa). His children, Sylvia Guadalupe Young, Horace Wesley Young IV, Alma Rosa Padgett, along with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Horace will be remembered for his calm presence, steady patience, and the strength he offered to those around him-a strength rooted in kindness, humility, and a deep love for his family. Horace had a unique ability to make others feel safe, heard, and valued. He never rushed, never raised his voice, and met life’s challenges with gratitude and grace.
His life was a testament to integrity, resilience, and purpose. Horace leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, service, compassion, and love that will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know him.
