Irene (Baxter) Palmer peacefully transitioned to her heavenly rest on February 20, 2024. She was born on January 28, 1926 in Doddsville, Sunflower County, Mississippi to Nathaniel and Maggie Moore. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Personal Savior and was a member of New Trinity Baptist Church. She was a former choir member, worked with the Pastor’s Aid Club, and Missionary Society.
Irene and Mack Baxter III were married in 1940 and came to Akron, Ohio in 1944 with three children. Sis. Palmer helped with the income by working at the City Laundry in 1945. Later, she went to work at the Mayflower Hotel. The second day after WW II ended, she began working at the Akron Towel Supply Co. from where she retired.
Irene loved her family and friends. She was a “GLAM GRANDMA” and mother with all her beautiful and fashionable hats, clothing, shoes, and accessories. It was a joy when relatives from Chicago, Canton, and other areas came to Akron to celebrate birthdays, memorials, or other family events at her sister Minnie’s home.
Irene was preceded in death by her husbands Mack Baxter III and William Palmer, parents Nathaniel and Maggie Moore, sons, Anthony (Pee Wee) Baxter, Shelton Baxter, daughters, Minnie Whatley-Miller, Joanne Small, and Shelley Ann Baxter. Her brothers, Otis B. Moore, Nathaniel Moore Jr., and John Moore. Sister, Minnie Jackson, several nieces and nephews, and great-grandchildren.
Irene leaves to cherish her memories: Son, Mack (Gina) Baxter IV of Schaumburg, Ill., daughters: Dr. Beulah Hamilton (Dave Sr., deceased), Belinda Baxter, both of Akron, Ohio. Her sisters: Maggie Colvin of Akron, Ohio, Mary Johnson of Detroit, Michigan, and Elizabeth Washington of Chicago, Ill. Loving cousins: Charles and Shirley of Memphis, Tenn. Her beloved Canton, Ohio family: the Clark and Walker families. Thank you all for your prayers and “Buddy” you are appreciated. All the special nieces and nephews, you are loved.
