Isiah Ellis, affectionately known as “Ike” departed this life on September 23, 2024. Born on December 5, 1943, in Miami Florida, he was the beloved son of the late Esmoline and Charlie Ellis and the fourth of twelve siblings.
From an early age, Ike demonstrated remarkable maturity. As a teenager, along with his closest sister, Geraldine, he played a crucial role, in bringing his eight younger siblings by bus; from their grandmother’s house in Georgia to Akron, Ohio, where his parents had relocated to build a new life. In Akron, Isiah attended South High School, where he excelled in mathematics, football, and track, graduating in 1962. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving proudly during the Vietnam War. His dedication earned him an honorable discharge, and he continued his career with the U.S. Navy in various leadership positions, most notably the within Naval Shipyards in Long Beach, California.
After serving in the military, Isiah relocated to Long Beach California; where he met and married his first wife, Mary Lane, with whom he welcomed his daughter, Kim Ellis. In 1985, Isiah found love again and married Elaine (Hackman) Ellis, with whom he shared 44 years. Isiah was diligent, dedicated, and loving.
After the loss of his mother in Akron, the illness of his father, and Isiah returned to Akron with his wife, Elaine. Although Isiah had a quiet nature; he was also known for his humor and candidness. He brought joy to family gatherings with his wisdom and wittiness. He was a protective and supportive brother who was endearing to his sisters. His brothers, Johnny Frank and Harold enjoyed Isiah’s competitive spirit, whether they were enjoying the casino, watching sports, or engaging in a serious discussion about God and faith.
He enjoyed traveling, vacations, and creating lasting memories with his wife, daughter, and grandchildren. Isiah raved to everyone about his only daughter Kim and his grandchildren. Also, he enjoyed competing in golf tournaments and fishing excursions with his friends from Texas and California. Isiah will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Isiah was preceded in death by his parents, Esmoline and Charlie Ellis, stepmother, Willie Maude Ellis, brothers; John Frank and Paul Ellis; sisters, Mamie Ellis, Dianne Porter, Yvonne Walker, and Marilyn Thompson; stepson, Willie Crittendon Jr.
Isiah leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elaine Ellis; daughter Kim Ellis, three grandchildren, Heaven Gobel, Trinity Gobel, and Matteus Gobel; brother, Harold Ellis; Sisters, Geraldine Smith, Arlene (Leon) Matthews, Sylvia (Kevin) Tolbert, Sharon (Marvin) Brown, brother-in-law, Terry Thompson, goddaughter Stephanie Shell, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved and cherished him. Isiah will be remembered for his strength, even during adversity and illness, his leadership, his tenacity, and his unwavering commitment to his family and career.
