Isiah Ellis, affectionately known as “Ike” departed this life on September 23, 2024. Born on December 5, 1943, in Miami Florida, he was the beloved son of the late Esmoline and Charlie Ellis and the fourth of twelve siblings.
From a young age Ike demonstrated remarkable maturity. Taking on the responsibility of helping to reunite his family. As a teenager, along with his closet sister, Geraldine, he played a crucial role in bringing his eight younger siblings by bus, from their grandmother’s house in Georgia to Akron, Ohio, where his parents had relocated to build a new life.
In Akron, Isiah attended South High School, where he excelled in both football and track, graduating in 1962. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. His dedication earned him an honorable discharge, and he continued his career with the navy in various capacities, particularly as a ship repair planner.
After his service in the armed forces Isiah relocated to Long Beach California, where he met and married his first wife, Mary Lane, with whom he welcomed his daughter, Kim Ellis. In 1985, Isiah found love again when he met and married Elaine, with whom he shared 38 years. Isiah was hard-working, dedicated, and loving. He enjoyed traveling, vacations and creating lasting memories with his wife, daughter and grandchildren.
After the loss of his mother in Akron, the illness of his father, and missing his siblings, Isiah returned to Akron with his wife to reunite with his family. Although Isiah had a general quiet nature he was also known for his humor. He brought joy to family gatherings, which his nieces and nephews especially enjoyed. He had a special bond with his great nephew, Andrew, who Elaine babysat, who Ike affectionately called, “Ralph” as they road on the riding lawn mower.
It was Isiah’s competitive spirit that was enjoyed by his youngest brother, Harold, whether they were at the casinos, watching Cleveland sports teams or engaging in a serious discussion about God and faith. Isiah also enjoyed competing in golf with his friends and day fishing.
Isiah will be remembered for his strength, even during adversity and illness, his leadership, his tenacity and unwavering commitment to do better. He leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Isiah was preceded in death by his parents, Esmoline and Charlie Ellis, stepmother, Willie Maude Ellis, brothers; John Frank and Paul Ellis; sisters, Mamie Ellis, Dianne Porter, Yvonne Walker, and Marilyn Thompson; stepson, Willie Crittendon.
Isiah leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Elaine Ellis; daughter Kim Ellis, three grandchildren, Heaven E., Trinity E., and Matteus E.; brother, Harold Ellis; Sisters, Geraldine Smith, Arlene (Leon) Matthews, Sylvia (Kevin) Tolbert, Sharon (Marvin) Brown, brother-in-law, Terry Thompson, and goddaughter Stephanie Shell, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends, Isiah will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
