Isolene A. Burke was born to the late Author Burke and Iris Adlam on February 15, 1950, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the second of eleven children. Isolene was preceded in death by her eldest sister, Lovena Burke.
Isolene was a faithful and dedicated member of Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church for over twenty years. She was also a member of the hospitality committee, where she brought her gifted talent for cooking to her church community. When she cooked, everyone was always welcomed at the table. She was known for her Jamaican cuisine and baked toto. She owned Island Style for over twenty eight years.
Isolene was a single mother of three children: Albert A. Dailey, Janet P. Smith, and Carla Lewis. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening, and assisting people in need. She was like a mother to all, always available to listen to and give advice to anyone who sought her counsel.
One of the most treasured lessons was ensuring she taught her children and grandchildren how to survive, shake that dust off, and keep moving. She did not allow setbacks to hold her down. Isolene was very family-oriented, and her volunteer work touched everyone around her.
Known for her compassion to anyone that crossed her path, Isolene was quiet, humble, and reserved. Her actions did all the speaking for her. She always stood firm in her decisions because she took the time to calculate her expected ending result strategically. She was an astute businessperson; whenever there was a negotiation to be made, she would not be pressured but would take her own time to make a proper decision. In the end, the best description of Isolene, also known as Ms. V, Mamma V, and Ms. Veronica, is taken from Proverbs 31:10-:30 (The Virtuous Woman).
Isolene is survived by her son, Albert A. (Sabrina) Dailey; daughters Janet P. (David Crosby) Smith and Carla Lewis; grandchildren Trent A. Dailey, George Smith Jr., Isolene Smith, Miles A. Dailey and Caleb A. Dailey; great-grandchild Wynter Angel Johnson; sisters Violet Burke, Mazie Burke, Sonya Burke, Phillis Burke, Rosemary Burke and Joan Green; brothers Alexander Burke, Junior Burke and Michael Green; and a host of nieces, nephews and loved ones.
