Mr. James Emanuel Gassaway was born January 1lth, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio at Mount Sinai Hospital to the late James Gassaway (Bobbie) and Ruth McGruder (Henderson).
In 1975, James married Terri Smith, and together they welcomed a daughter named Marlene Gassaway. After their divorce, James found love again with Vertree Williams, who he spent over 35 years with until her passing. James cherished spending time with Vertree, and they shared many joyful moments together fishing at Edgewater Lake and hosting family gatherings in their backyard. James had a diverse career that included working at the farmers market and goodwill, as well as earning a truck driving degree. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, having been honorably discharged in 1972.
James was a beloved individual, remembered by many as a gentle giant. He had a knack for remembering birthdays and would always make a point to call and send his well wishes. James also enjoyed discussing the unpredictable weather of Cleveland, trying his luck with the lottery, and watching classic shows such as Heat of the Night and Gunsmoke. His friendly and easy-going nature made him a joy to be around, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
James was preceded in death by his sister Avella Hughes, brother Michael Gassaway, and niece Michelle Hemphill.
He is survived by his daughter Marlene Parrotte, sister Joyce Miller, stepson Leon Gassaway, and three cherished grandchildren, Dominique Taylor, Dwight Taylor, and Dari Thiongo. Additionally, James leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including nephews Christopher Miller, Timothy Hughes, William Hughes, Marcus Hemphill, Archilles Mitchell, Darnell Hemphill, and Antonio Hemphill, as well as nieces Patti Miller and Camilla (Cee Cee) Hemphill. His passing will be mourned by a host of friends and loved ones.
