James Ray Carter was born on March 9, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the oldest of five children born to Henry Carter and Louester Jones Carter. He received his formal education in the Cleveland Public schools and graduated from East Tech High School. After graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Vietnam for most of his military career.
Following his discharge from the military, James worked for a short period for Ohio Bell. A while later, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Morehouse College, graduating with degrees in English and History. He returned to Cleveland and earned his law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by the State of Ohio, eventually retiring from the Northeast Pre-release Center.
He was a hard worker who was always resilient in the face of adversity. Even when ill, he was never angry about it. Instead, he faced his illness with amazing bravery and strength.
“Carter”, who was an excellent swimmer, was a big sports fan who enjoyed watching football and boxing. He loved music – especially reggae, jazz, blues, and gospel. In addition, he was an avid reader who enjoyed discussing politics and world events.
James was a man of faith, integrity, and character. He was a spiritual, caring, and giving soul who valued loyalty, honesty, and “realness”. Everyone who knew James will cherish his impact on their lives.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Laverne; granddaughter, Vallana Craig; sisters, Mary Elaine Sykes, Yvonne Griffin, Connie Harden (Vincent); three nephews, Johnnie Griffin (Angel), Brian Carter (Jacqueline), Michael Reese; sister-in-law, Gail (Gregory); and mother-in-law, Virginia Bynum. James will also be missed by a host of great friends and extended family.
