Janet Rosetta Young, affectionately known as “Jan”, “Nanee”, “Mommie” and “Ma”, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024 at 89 years old after her battle against dementia. Born to Clarence Hughes and Flora Titterington in Cleveland, Ohio on September 9, 1934, she was a consummate matriarch to her family, exceptional leader on her job, dancing machine after hours and quiet financial secretary at Affinity Missionary Baptist Church.
She graduated from John Hay High School and soon thereafter married Orlando Young in 1957. This union blessed them with two beautiful daughters, Setrena and Kimberly. Janet began working for the Federal Government at the Veterans Administration Building in downtown Cleveland. She quickly moved up through the ranks and became a Loan Supervisor for the VA. She retired from the VA after 35 years of dedicated leadership and service.
Janet accepted Christ at an early age and she began following Him whole-heartedly during her adult life. She joined Affinity Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio and soon began serving as the financial secretary in the church office. She was a member of Affinity Missionary Baptist Church for over 20 years until her sight became a barrier to attending and working in the office.
Anyone who knew Janet would say that she was a “class act”. She carried herself with integrity, grace and refinement and stood by her convictions. She ALWAYS put family first and if something “was going down”, she had her family’s back! She loved like there was no tomorrow and was ALWAYS there to help out whenever there was a need. Janet truly showered her children and grandchildren with whatever their hearts desired. She enjoyed spending the holidays with her family, shopping, birthday dinners, traveling and music (Smokey Robinson was one of her faves!).
Janet leaves her loving memories to be cherished by: Her daughters Setrena and Kimberly (Charles), her granddaughter Kayla, grandson Nathaniel, great grandchildren Harper and Arlyn III, many nieces and nephews and a host of other loving relatives, caregivers and friends. Janet’s brother Robert Hughes and sister Loretta Harris preceded her in death.
Janet Young will always be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her
