Jennie V. Jackson Hill-Williams was born February 2, 1928 in Lowndes County Alabama to the late Clifton Jackson, Sr. and Annie Lee Harrison Jackson.
She was educated in the Lowndes County Public Schools and confessed Christ at an early age, joining New Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. As a teenager, she moved to Montgomery where she met her future husband Edward Hill. They were married on October 1, 1945. During the early years of their marriage Edward served both in the U S Navy and Air Force. While stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, the family relocated to Victorville, CA. for a year.
After his service to our country was completed, they returned to Montgomery. Soon Montgomery became the center of America’s civil rights struggle with the start of the Bus Boycott. One day, as Jennie was getting off of a bus, she was handed a flyer announcing a meeting the next night at the Holt Street Baptist Church. This was the result of the arrest of Rosa Parks earlier in the day for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. The church was packed, Jennie, Edward, his sisters and brothers-in-laws found seats in the balcony. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a soul stirring speech encouraging the crowd to join in the fight to end this injustice. The Montgomery Bus Boycott began that night. Many of those who attended the meeting, including Jennie and Edward, not only refused to ride the buses, but volunteered to give rides to others when possible. This was the start of Jennie’s community involvement. While the boycott didn’t end until December 20, 1956, the family moved to Akron earlier that year. There, as always, Jennie’s first priority was her family. She was involved in the activities of her children, including serving as President of the PTA, Band Parents Association and in many other volunteer positions at Crouse Elementary, West Jr. High and South High Schools.
The family joined Mount Olive Baptist Church shortly after moving to Akron. Jennie very quickly became involved in ministry serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess, President of the Deaconess Board, Missionary Society, Sunday School Superintendent, and member of the Senior Choir. She also held various positions in the Northern Ohio Baptist District Association including, President of the Akron Sub District of the Women’s Auxiliary, and was a convention facilitator for more than 60 years. Jennie trained new deaconesses for a number of churches. She was a dynamic speaker which led to her being asked to speak for various church functions including Women’s Day and Mission Sunday all over the state of Ohio.
Jennie retired from Gold Circle Stores where she worked in Shipping and Receiving. During the spring and summer, she spent most of her time gardening. She was the proud recipient of a number of Keep Akron Beautiful Awards.
After Edward’s death, she found a very special person to share her life with. Jennie and Frank were married March, 2007. They enjoyed their golden years together eating out, watching Family Feud, all the Judge shows, spending time with family and regularly attended church together until her health failed. Frank attended Antioch Baptist Church, where she subsequently joined.
Jennie was proceeded in death by; her parents, husband, newborn daughter Deborah Ann, son Dr. Edward S. Hill, Jr., sisters Bernice Montgomery, Eunice Knox, brothers, Gustt and J.D. Bibb, James, Arthur and Archie Harrison.
