Jimmie “Cootie” Reed passed away on September 11, with his daughter Stephanie by his side. He was the sixth child born to Grant and Helena Reed on October 30, 1932, in Temple, TX. The family relocated to San Angelo, TX where he continued his education at Blackshear High School. On September 11, 1951, Jimmie married Mary Lee Peyton and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. There were six children born of their union.
Jimmie spent a proud and rewarding 43 years of service at Republic Steel, later known as LTV Steel, where he worked tireless days and nights on the Hot Strip Mill. He was a hard-working man who often held additional jobs to provide for his family.
Jimmie was very active in the United Steelworkers Association (USWA), as well as the Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees 979 (SOAR), until he stepped down as President in 2023 at 90 years young.
He was a faithful member of Messiah Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and spent countless hours helping others in need.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Onetha Mikell-Reed; brothers, Emmett, Joseph, LeRoy, and Grant Reed; and sisters, Ruby Peyton, Geraldine Ford, and Alice Johns.
He leaves to cherish his memory his six children, Jimmie Reed Jr. (Rizza), Thomas Reed (Francine), Ruth Tabu (Jun), Stephanie Reed (Michael), Gary Reed (Marnie), and Edith Reed; his brother Charles Reed (LaRue) and his sister Gloria DeWitt, both of San Angelo, TX; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
