In Loving Memory of Joseph H. Horton, Jr.
September 18, 1941 – July 7, 2025
Joseph H. Horton, Jr., beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, minister, and friend, entered eternal rest on July 7, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on September 18, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph lived a life full of purpose, faith, and unwavering commitment to service.
Raised in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn, Joseph was educated in the George Westinghouse Vocational High School before attending Central State College, a foundation that instilled in him both academic excellence and deep-rooted pride in his heritage. He moved back to New York and earned his Bachelor’s degree from New York Institute of Technology. Later he attended Ashland Theological Seminary and followed a path that would lead him to both professional distinction and spiritual calling.
Joseph’s career was as impactful as it was diverse. He served 22 years with the New York Police Department as a dedicated Detective in the Forensic and Homicide Investigative Unit, where his sharp mind and calm presence made him a respected figure among his superiors and peers. He received numerous awards and recognition for outstanding performance and attention to detail. After retiring from the NYPD, Joseph transitioned into the private sector as a successful Sales Manager at ADT. Yet his truest calling came in ministry—becoming a Chaplain while in Ohio and dedicating himself to spiritual outreach, particularly within the hospital and correctional facilities, where he offered faith, dignity, and hope to those often overlooked.
Shortly after joining The House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn, NY, a faithful servant of the Lord, Joseph was ordained a Deacon in the 1990s and later an Ordained Minister in the early 2000s. He served diligently as Treasurer at the Oberlin House of the Lord Church, where his leadership and integrity left a lasting impression.
Joseph was preceded in death by his loving parents, Joseph F. Horton and Lelia Brandon; his sister, Barbara Simon; his first wife, Peggy Ann Farrington; his beloved sons, Lance Horton and Jeffery “Meeko” Horton; and his lifelong best friend, Clinton Kennerly.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Valerie Bates-Horton; his brother, William Atkinson Sr.; his sons, Glenn Horton and Joseph “Tutu” Horton II; his cherished grandchildren, Jacqui Kennedy, Iniu Horton, and Samirah Horton; his niece Stella Atkinson-Peay and nephew William Atkinson Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. His passing is deeply felt by a host of friends and spiritual family from The House of the Lord Churches, former colleagues, and countless others whose lives he touched.
Joseph had a zest for life that extended beyond his many accomplishments. He had a sharp eye for politics, a mind for business, and a huge appreciation of sports. He was equally content loudly cheering from the bleachers often shouting his signature phrase “GET YA BALL BACK!” He was known for his booming voice from the stands—a saying that lives on in family lore and spirited conversations to this day. He was often found debating current events or watching his favorite shows like Shark Tank, court programs like “Judge Judy”, or some good old-fashioned game shows like “Family Feud” with Steve Harvey.
Among the many fond memories shared by loved ones is the joy he brought to a simple family meal—coining the playful phrase “YIPPITY ZIP” while enjoying pizza at NYC’s Uno Pizzeria with his son Joseph and friends Andrew and John. It was in those moments of laughter, tradition, and family that Joseph’s spirit shone brightest.
Joseph H. Horton, Jr. leaves behind a legacy of integrity, compassion, and unwavering devotion to faith and family. He will be remembered not only for the roles he held, but for the man he was—principled, God-fearing and faithful, warm-hearted, and profoundly loved. May his soul rest in peace and his memory forever be a blessing.
