Joseph Hines, aged 62, passed away on August 16, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on May 7, 1962, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Leona Hines and Joseph Tabb, Joe was a beacon of strength and generosity, known for his punctuality, dedication, and protective nature. He was an exemplary father, beloved son, devoted brother, and cherished friend, whose life was marked by an unwavering commitment to creating a brighter future for himself and others.
Joe’s academic and athletic prowess shone brightly at East High School and continued at The Penn State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in communication in 1984. Joe grew up in a modest neighborhood, where he witnessed firsthand the challenges of generational hardships. Undeterred, he set out on a transformative journey to break these cycles. With a fierce determination and an indomitable spirit, Joe pursued a college education as a means to uplift not only himself but also to inspire those around him. He was a respected force on the football field, starting as a defensive tackle for three years with the Penn State Nittany Lions, contributing to their national championship in 1982. His athletic career peaked when he made the roster for the Dallas Cowboys in 1984.
After his sports career, Joe dedicated himself to his role as a Heat Treatment/Finishing Supervisor at Universal Metal Products, where he worked from 2005 until his passing in 2024.
Beyond his professional life, Joe served as a role model and mentor and was an excellent father. He loved his children, and they were truly his greatest pride and joy. Joe was deeply involved in Alcoholics Anonymous, reflecting his commitment to personal growth and support for others battling addiction. Earlier this summer, he celebrated 21 years of sobriety. Joe was a founding member of A Place for Us Spiritual Retreat, where he also served as a trustee. He maintained close ties with The Penn State University as an active alumnus.
Joe is survived by his children, Joseph Brandon Hines and Dr. Joselyn Sharonne Hines; siblings Bobby (Princess) Hines, Irma Pollard, Jacqueline Booker, Annie Rivers, Janice Hines, John (Anita) Hines, Andre (Dawn) Hines, Gwendolyn Hines, Jessie Hines, and Crystal Hines; bonus moms Matilda Hubbard and Lynette Hoehn; bonus sister Lora Gay; sponsor of 21 years John Hatton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and coworkers.
In addition to his parents Leona Hines and Joseph Tabb, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gregory and Ricky Hines; his cousin Gwendolyn Davis-Kelley; and his bonus dad, Kenneth Hoehn.
Joe’s legacy of dedication, kindness, and resilience will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew him. Rest in Peace, Joe. Your light will forever guide us.
