Josephine Ellis Jackson was born on June 1, 1949 to the late Lewis and Helen Ellis.  She was the first born of four children and affectionately known as Dearie.  She departed this life on May 18, 2021 at Ahuja University Hospital. 

When Josephine’s mother passed, she was only 9 years old.  At this early age, Josephine had to help her father with her siblings.  However, she did receive help from other aunts to assist with her siblings.  She actually named her youngest sister, Pat.   

Josephine was 20 yrs. old when her father passed.  She received help from her late uncle, Warren Chappell Sr. until she was the legal guardian and continued to raise her youngest sister. 

Josephine loved biking and cooking, especially around the holidays.  She learned to sew from her mom, who made all children’s clothing.  She also enjoyed listening to jazz and gospel.

Josephine acquired her education in the Cleveland public school system and received many awards for her achievements.  She continued her education through college and became a 3-time college graduate, receiving an associate degree in science (1973), a Bachelor of Arts degree (2003) and a master’s in social work (2007). 

Josephine’s work ethics included security at the Halle Brothers Co.  She then became an employee for the Cuyahoga County as the deputy superintendent at the Cleveland Detention Center for 28 years; retiring only after she became ill.

Josephine married the love of her life, Billy J. Jackson (deceased), on July 26, 1980.  She loved dearly her two God sons, N’Namdi Miles, and Jason Miles.

She professed Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church.  She loved to read her bible diligently at home every day.

Josephine leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters, Helen Speller (Elder James Speller- deceased) Philadelphia Pa., and Patricia Ellis (Lewis Ellis- deceased); a host of nieces, nephews, Godsons, and caregivers.
