Karen Dawson, purposeful in the world of fashion and a beloved matriarch, passed away at the age of 69 on August 1, 2023. Her passing has left a void in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
Born on April 24, 1954, in Cleveland, Karen spent her early years in the city she called home. As she grew, she was raised in the neighboring town of Oakwood.
Karen’s journey in her career began when becoming the first African American woman to work for Mattel, a feat that showcased her talent, resilience, and commitment to overcoming obstacles in the industry. Her groundbreaking achievements opened doors for countless others and served as an inspiration to future generations.
After her successful career with Mattel, Karen embarked on a new adventure as a bus driver for RTA, where she served the community with dedication and a warm smile for many years. She embraced this role with the same enthusiasm she had shown in her fashion career, connecting with passengers, and brightening their days with her kindness.
Upon departure from the RTA, Karen enjoyed her independence to the fullest. She cherished the simple pleasures of life, especially her favorite pastime-shopping and days out with the “Golden Girls.” Whether it was finding something for a low cost and then returning it the next day or something special for her beloved grandchildren, Karen found joy in every shopping excursion, to her family known as the “Karen Chronicles.”
Karen’s love for her family was a guiding force in her life. She was a pillar of strength and support for her son, Kenneth, and her daughter-in-law, Jelena, always providing a loving presence and words of wisdom whether or not they needed it.
She leaves behind her loving brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces, whom she adored and showered with affection and guidance.
Karen’s heart was vast, and she had a host of cousins and friends who held a special place in her life. She cultivated meaningful relationships with those she met, leaving a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
But above all else, Karen’s heart belonged to her cherished grandchildren, Khian, Kaylin, and Kennedy. They were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them. From watching NCIS or “Reel Steel” with her grandson, or listening to her granddaughter talk about her day at school to participating in family gatherings (she loved a party), Karen made it her mission to be an ever-present and loving grandmother, leaving an everlasting mark on their young lives.
May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her love, achievements, and influence will continue to guide us through life’s journey.
