Katherine Janie West, a beloved mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed peacefully on January 5th, 2026, at the age of 90. She lived a life deeply rooted in faith, kindness, and devotion to others.
Born on May 10th, 1935, in Macon County Roba, Alabama. Katherine was a woman of quiet strength and enduring grace. Her Christian faith guided every aspect of her life, and she found great joy in prayer, scripture, and worship.
At an early age Katherine was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church and later in life she was a longtime member of Saint Mark Baptist church where she served faithfully as an announcer and Mother.
As a young woman she attended and graduated from Macon County training school. She was reared in the Warrior Stand community in Macon County. Katherine moved to Cleveland, OH after high school to pursue a life outside of her hometown.
She immediately found employment at Bailey’s Department Store as a Elevator Operator. After leaving Baileys she was employed at William Kitt Boutique, as the first black unit coordinator. Later a greater opportunity opened up at General Electric where she worked as a mounter. She remained at General Electric for over 30 years until she retired.
Early on in her life, Katherine fell in love and got married to Hillman West. In her golden years she met her lifelong companion Edward Grier who she shared many amazing memories with.
Along with many other things, Katherine enjoyed modeling, bowling on many teams around the city and she had a passion for traveling. She was a Lifetime Member of the Career Women’s Club. She always looked forward to attending her high school and family reunions. Katherine was always recognized for her sweet, soft demeanor as well as being very hardworking. She was also an amazing cook, specializing in soul food dishes.
Katherine was devoted to her family and considered them one of God’s greatest blessings. She offered wisdom without judgment, love without condition, and support without hesitation. Her only daughter and two grandchildren were the light of her life! When she had her first grandchild, she earned her title “Meme” which most of her family would refer to her as instead of Katherine. She was present for every accomplishment and milestone her daughter and grandchildren ever achieved.
She was the 3rd oldest of 8 children, and she loved all her siblings and the families they created wholeheartedly. Katherine loved the holidays and family events. Any chance to be around her family she enjoyed every second of it.
Katherine leaves behind to cherish her precious memories: Daughter- Valerie Harvey Grandchildren- Taquan Winfrey (Felicia), Tashana Winfrey Sister- Carrie Byrd Brother-
Alvin Renfroe (Clara) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who all loved her dearly.
Preceding her in death are her siblings Clarence Harvey, Leonard Harvey, Bill Harvey, Lillian Monroe, Helen Marie Wilson, and her parents Sallie & Walter Harvey.
A celebration of Katherine West life will be held on January 17th at St. Mark Baptist Church with Willie Armstead. In accordance with her faith, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life, trusting that she now rests in the presence of her savior, hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
