Kimbrough Travis Sr., age 91, went home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2022.
Kimbrough Travis Sr. was born on July 24, 1931, in Beatrice, Alabama to the late Tom Travis and Costella Stallworth Travis. He was one of seven children.
He joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beatrice, AL at an early age. He received his education at the Monroe County Training School in Beatrice. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War.
Following his military service, Kimbrough moved to Cleveland, OH where he was united in marriage to Dorothy Robinson. Five children were born to this union.
Kimbrough was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH for over 60 years.
Kimbrough worked in various capacities for Ford Motor Company for nearly three decades, retiring in 1997 after 27 years of employment.
Kimbrough loved fishing and gardening and was passionate about baseball. He always had the greenest lawn on the block. Family and friends looked forward to the fresh vegetables that Kimbrough shared from his large vegetable garden each year. He also farmed and contributed his expertise to local community gardens in the area. As a young man living in Alabama, Kimbrough practiced regularly with the Mobile Black Bears (including a young Henry “Hank” Aaron), one of several Negro League baseball teams which emerged in response to segregated Major League Baseball during this period. Prior to moving to Cleveland, he was being actively recruited to become a player for the Negro League. However, upon relocating to Cleveland and meeting Dorothy, the love of his life, Kimbrough willingly gave up his dream of playing professional baseball yet never lost his love of the sport. Throughout his life, Kimbrough looked for opportunities to enjoy his favorite past time and continued to play with a baseball league whenever he had the opportunity Every Fourth of July holiday Kimbrough coordinated full on softball games among both sides of the extended family at Woodhill Park, with adults and children participating. Kimbrough and his brother would serve as the captains of the teams with the right to select those family members perceived as the best ball players in the family!
Kimbrough passed away peacefully on Wednesday November 23, 2022, at the age of 91 years old, surrounded by his family.
