LaVerne Rivers went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 22, 2022. LaVerne was saved and had strong faith. She loved the Lord and often talked about how God’s peace that passes all understanding was so important and manifested in her life. She listened and watched church on zoom every Sunday. LaVerne graduated from Buchtel High School in 1977.
LaVerne worked at the Akron Health Department for 15 years before beginning her career with the United Postal Service. She retired from the Post Office after 27 years of service.
LaVerne was such a caring person. She would always try to help those in need. She never wanted recognition for helping those in need. She always wanted to remain a behind the scenes helper. LaVerne’s “gift” in life was friendship. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times.” She would always set a wonderful example of what a true friend should be, and she led by being that example. She was truly blessed with true friendships throughout her lifetime. Her life span of friendships ranged from 60 years to 27 years. If you had her as your friend, then consider yourself blessed. There was nothing she would not do for you. LaVerne enjoyed traveling, going to plays and concerts, playing games with family and friends, playing cards, playing ruzzle and going to the movies.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Irvin and Sufern Rivers Sr., brothers; Irvin Rivers Jr. (Jabo), Larry Rivers, and Maurice Rivers.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted one and only sister, Bernadine Scott; sister-in-law, Penny Rivers; aunts, Ida Bradford, and Shirley Bradford; special nephew, Eric Scott; nephews, Lawrence (Candice) Turman and Alex Rivers; niece, Candace Ayers; great nephew, Nausior Turman; great nieces, Nautica Shropshire, and Lauren Turman; special cousins, Adrienne Bradford Griffin, and Andre Bradford; goddaughter, Tayler B. Griffin; best friends, Jessica Battle, Ellen Jones, Anna Jones, Twyla Robinson, Andreau Templeton-Moorer, Brandy Thornton, and Lonnie Westry Sr.; and a host of cousins and friends.

LaVerne and I were the last two contestants in the sixth-grade spelling bee! Her grace and sweetness continued through high school and no doubt beyond.
