Lawrence David Chavis Sr. born March 2, 1950, in Akron, OH departed from this life on July 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by his mother the late Mrs. Beaulah Lee Chavis Williams and the late Ollie Chavis; and his granddaughter Shayla Marie Chavis and his uncle Booker T. Garth. He was raised by his mother and the late David “Pops” Williams.
Lawrence affectionately known as “Big Larry” was educated in the Akron Public School system. He graduated from Hower Vocational High School in 1969. Lawrence met and married the love of his life Dorothy Jean Colley on June 7, 1969. From this union, they were blessed with four children: Lawrence Jr., Tabrielle, Teika, and Antwon.
Larry was an electrician by trade and was very skillful and talented. He was also gifted and considered a “Jack of all Trades” in many other areas of the Construction Industry. After 40 years of service as an electrician, he retired from IBEW Local Union 306.
Larry’s special interests and hobbies were fishing, gardening, cooking, and watching both the Cleveland Browns and various other sports. When he was younger, he loved playing baseball. At one point he even considered becoming a professional baseball player. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.
Larry leaves to cherish his loving memory, his devoted wife, Dorothy Chavis of 51 years; 2 daughters, Tabrielle (Robert) Samuel of Columbus, OH, Teika Chavis of Akron, OH; 2 sons, Lawrence (Kela) Chavis Jr. of Garner, NC and Antwon Chavis of Virginia; 6 grandchildren, Desinia (Joseph) Miller of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Brianna (Brandeshia) Chavis of Moore, OK, Kayla Chavis of Garner, NC, Noah Baker, Collin, and Callyn Samuel; 1 sister, Katherine Chavis of Philadelphia, PA; 2 brothers, Ronald Chavis of Philadelphia, PA and Leonard Williams of Philadelphia, PA; special aunts, Lucienda Garth of Akron, OH and Vera Berry of Kansas City, KS; special nieces, Serena and Bridgette Williams of Detroit, MI; special nephews, Michael Chavis of Feasterville Trevose, PA, Marcus Miller of Akron, OH, Carlos Chavis of Lorain OH, Henry Sweet of Akron, OH and Michael Beard of Akron, OH and a host of other nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
