He graduated from East Technical High School in 1966. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Transportation Movement Specialist. During his military service, he was stationed in Germany and later completed a tour in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Leon was a proud veteran who had the utmost admiration and respect for his fellow Vets. He enjoyed attending events that honored their service and was often seen donning his Vietnam Veteran cap that read, “All Gave Some and Some Gave All.”
Leon had a deep appreciation for music, which he played throughout the house almost 24 hours a day. He enjoyed listening to everything from Mozart to Donny Hathaway to Lil’ Kim. He loved his family, cherished making new connections, and was often the life of the party. His warmth, humor, beaming smile, and gift for conversation allowed him to form lasting friendships wherever he went.
Leon and his wife Bonnie spent than more than forty years devoted to one another and sharing a deep commitment to serving others. As Bonnie dedicated herself to guiding and nurturing children through her work at Euclid Park Elementary School and through church ministries such as Vacation Bible School, Leon could often be found by her side supporting those efforts and encouraging the young people whose lives they touched.
In his later years, Leon expanded his investment endeavors into advancing human causes that were close to his heart. He regularly donated to organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, Disabled American Veterans, The City Mission, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Animal Protective League.
Faith played an important role in Leon’s life. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in East Cleveland and, following its closure, continued his ministry and fellowship at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He remained engaged in church life until health challenges made active participation difficult.
In addition to his beloved wife, Bonnetta Dudley, Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Dudley and Fannie Holton; stepmother, Lola Dudley; grandmother, Alice Gertrude Dudley; and brother, Lawrence Holton.
Leon is survived by his children, Angelina Hamilton (Charles) and Kevin Dudley (James); two granddaughters, Lauryn and Olivia Hamilton; three brothers, Richmond Holton (Patti), Phillip Holton (Alese), and David Dudley; two sisters, Sandra Diggs and Sandra Smith (Myles); his “Sweet Pea,” Ruth Pitts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and a faithful church community who mourn his passing and celebrate his life.
