Leon Wharton was born in Barberton, Ohio, on December 16, 1951, to the late Jack Wharton and Odelle B. Wharton. He was raised by the late Hannah Hanson and her son, Willard Hanson. In 1971, he graduated from Akron North High School, where he played football and wrestled.

After high school, Leon began his career with the U.S. Postal service, then working at Pepsi Co., where he worked until 1993. While working full time, he returned to his love of football by coaching the varsity team at his alma mater from 1986 to 1990. After leaving North High, he went on to coach North Bantum peewee football, Northwest Hawks, and many others.

Leon was also a member of the original Church of God, serving in various positions.

He was proceeded in death by siblings, Frances, Robert, Jack Sr., Ruthann, Michael Todd, Timothy Hanson, nephew, Robert Jr. and niece, Teresa Biddle.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughter, Terrell Renae Wharton; son, Darius (Britni); mother of his children, Deborah Carson Walters (Jerry); grandchildren, R’Iyana (Michael), Adrianna, Ivy; great grandchildren, M’Ylaya, Michael, baby boy; brother, Anthony Wharton, sisters, Janie Williams of Chicago, Ginger (Chris) Hanson Ruffin, Annette (Victor) Daniels, Anita Wharton, Tina Wharton, Otis Powell, Charles of Texas; stepmother, Diane Wharton and a host of nieces, nephews and loved ones.
