Lillian Delores Wright, affectionately called Lois, was born on October 18, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Richard Sr. and Gertrude Burnett.
Through the guidance of their mother, Lillian and her brothers were taught about Jesus at an early age. She spent her early childhood in the Central neighborhood where she fondly spoke about the comradery, she had with many cousins who lived doors, or a short bus ride away.
Later after the family moved to the Glenville neighborhood, she attended Patrick Henry Junior High School and East High School in Cleveland. After graduation, she married Rudolph Wright and soon the young couple welcomed a daughter, Sherise.
After becoming a single mom, she attended Sawyer Business College, majoring in bookkeeping. She worked as a bookkeeper and dental assistant to support her and Sherise.
Lillian joined Temple Baptist Church in the 1960’s under Reverend Ward where she remained under the leadership of Pastor Sedrick Veal. She served as member and eventually the president of the Courtesy Guild Ministry.
She lived her life with a passion for helping others. One example is while banking at the former AmeriTrust on East 55th Street, a robbery took place. Instead of panicking and finding a place to hide herself, she noticed a young pregnant woman who became hysterical and guided her under a table where they both hovered until the drama ended.
In the mid-1970s, she met and married Louis McCoy, this union produced a daughter, Khalilah. Around this time, Lois worked for the radio station WJMO and Hough Development Corporation, where she met Louis.
Besides bookkeeping and dental assistant, Lois worked in finance for various companies. If you wanted a job, she could get you one, with unlimited overtime. Lois had a small business that she ran from her home, filing income taxes for her friends and family.
Her love of ballroom and line dancing is legendary. She attended classes throughout the city as well as traveled to other states to dance for fun. She was often teased by her grandchildren about how they would come to her to learn new steps.
In 2017, she retired from Metro Health Medical Center. After 20 years of service. She always said she retired because she wanted to do more traveling, and that she did! She’s visited several states from coast to coast. She also traveled to New York City a few times where she saw Denzel Washington on Broadway and visited “The View” tv show.
As her health began to decline, she divided her time between her two daughters and her brother, Greg.
Lois lived a full life! Her fight for her life surprised the doctors and physical therapy staff. She never complained. When asked how you are today, she always responded “I’m fine!”
Lois is loved and respected by so many. Her gentle presence, sense of humor, red nails, and high heels, made her the center of our attention.
