Lucille Agatha Calhoun, 96, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 5, 2019. She was born on February 27, 1923 to the late Lee Noah Wallace and Bertha Gladman Wallace in the Kenmore neighborhood of Akron, Ohio. She was the fifth out of seven children to her parents and lived the longest of anyone in her family!
Lucille worked several jobs over the course of her life. She was a factory worker at BF Goodrich, a nurse’s aide at Barberton Citizens Hospital, and a nurse’s aide at several nursing homes and at Brecksville Psychiatric Hospital. She also worked in the x-ray file room at City Hospital until her retirement on April 30, 1986. When someone was unable to find an x-ray, she was always able to find it! She was an active church member as well. She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Brotherhood Baptist Church (her uncles` church), Akron Alliance Fellowship and Macedonia Baptist Church. She attended Bible Study Fellowship for at least 5 years on Monday evenings. She was a Sunday School teacher and usher for many years. She was President of the Women’s Prayer Group for Missionaries at Akron Alliance Fellowship. She prayed regularly with a group of women from Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. She read and studied scriptures daily until her stroke in March of 2008. After that she meditated on the scripture she had read and memorized over the years. She loved listening to Gospel music while in her room. We would get her up 5 days a week and let her sit in her wheelchair in the living room. Her husband would give her physical therapy 5 days a week, long after Medicare stopped providing it for her. She was fashion minded and dressed appropriately for all occasions. She loved to shop and find new malls to visit. She didn’t just shop for herself, she also liked to shop for others. She really loved looking for sale items! She was also well aware of famous name brands in clothes and shoes. She was very wise, and she would tell you exactly what she thought about any topic. The advice would seem strange sometimes, but it usually turned out just like she said! She loved the Monday Night Outing at our home. Her husband would give the message and she would sing a solo or sing with the group. She would listen to the message and comment on it. She loved greeting company at the house and would sometimes sing for them. She also enjoyed receiving cards for the holidays, Get-Well cards, cards of encouragement, and birthday cards over the years. She really enjoyed receiving flowers for her birthday, Mother’s Day, and other special occasions. Her grandson Lewis sent her 85 roses on her 85th birthday, 90 roses on her 90th birthday, and 95 roses on her 95th birthday! She received most of her daily outfits from Angie and some from Toni; blankets, towels, wash cloths, hand towels, robes, gift cards, money, and socks from Ernest II’s family. Toni liked to send money and good smelling items. Martea liked to send flowers, gifts, cards, and make frequent phone calls. Her son-in-law John used to come over and push Mom up and down a ramp for her doctor’s appointments when we lived in Norton. Her son-in-law Pastor Ernest would often visit and pray with Mom. Ernest II and family would always visit on Christmas Eve and bring gifts. After his death in 2013, Michele and her children and their families would still come to visit and bring gifts.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Ernest Lee Calhoun I, loving children Cynthia Phillips, Angela (John) Hafford, Antoinette (Pastor Ernest) Brown, Andrea Martea Forcum, and daughter-in-law Michele (Ernest II, deceased) Calhoun. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law Jean Calhoun, Ann Calhoun, Beverly Shuler, and Irene Wallace. She also leaves behind eighteen grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
