Luvenia Rogers, affectionately known as Mama and Granny, was born in Rentz, Georgia, to Charlotte Pearson and Wilmon Kirkland and was later adopted by her grandparents, Irving and Ella Pearson. She was raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where she attended Salem High School. The foundation of her character was laid early, nurtured by the gentle and stern guidance of Ella and Irving. She was the youngest sibling in the house and was spoiled beyond measure.
Her high standards were shaped by guidance from her elders and the corrective measures they provided.
Luvenia married Jessie Rogers, Sr., a new minister from Wabash, Arkansas. Five children were born: Rutha Lee, Jessie, Jr., Lubertha, Thomas, and Luella (all deceased). In March, 1945, Jessie and Luvenia, along with their children, traveled North and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Ultimately, they built a house in Oakwood Village, Ohio. They had three more children there: Lorain (deceased), Mary Ellen, and James.
Luvenia and her husband became members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oakwood Village in 1946, during the tenure of Reverend C. Hart. She was a Sunday School teacher, director of the Usher Board, President of the Missionary Society, director of the Youth Fellowship, and the choir director. She raised her children to be active in the church as well
Over the years, Luvenia’s business sense led her to own multiple businesses, i.e., the Rogers Mail Order Co., an ice cream stand, a candy store, and a grocery store. She extended her education at Finn College but did not earn a diploma. She continued her business while her husband was inspired to organize a ministry in Twinsburg, Ohio. In 1962, the mission was up and running. In 1973, the mission was established as a church.
Luvenia’s loves were God, her husband, her children, and the church. Her favorite Bible verse was “In all thy way acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. Proverbs 3:6. Her favorite saying was: “If you trust him for one thing, trust him for all.”
Luvenia leaves to mourn 2 children, Mary Ellen Dale (Pierre Strachan), and James Rogers, 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great-grandchild.
Luvenia led a life marked by fulfillment and purpose. May she rest peacefully, knowing that her legacy will not end here.
