Malissa Mae Hurt ascended this life on December 31st, 2024, at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center.
Miss Hurt was born to the union of the late Vanis and Florida Hurt on September 2nd, 1930 in Akron, Ohio. She had an older sister, Mildred Brown who preceded her in death in 2013.
Malissa was educated through the Akron Public school system. She attended Bryant Elementary School, Grace School and Graduated from West High School as part of the January Class of 1950. She was the featured soloist at the West High Commencement exercises.
Malissa continued to matriculate her studies with the University of Akron, majoring in Music (Voice). She also studied under a vocal instructor, the late Mr. Balestera for eight years, specializing in Opera with many popular classical pieces sung in her melodious soprano voice.
In 1957, Malissa returned from New York City to Akron, Ohio. She was hired by the Akron O’Neils Department store. She started out as one of the first black sales clerks. She was eventually promoted to a buyer position in 1969. Malissa was a hard and dedicated employee until her retirement in 1995.
Malissa continued to serve her passion for singing until two days before her ascension. Her final song was “Thank You Lord”.
Malissa leaves to mourn; nephew Marvin K. Brown (Sharon) of Akron, Ohio, niece Vanessa A. Bonner of Newnan, Georgia, and nephew James D. Brown of Lithonia, Georgia. She also leaves a host of great and great great grand nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
