Mamie Lee Gilchrist (Primous) daughter of the late Ethel (Jackson) and Rev. Dudley Primous, Sr., was born July 24, 1935 in Fayette, Mississippi. She was the 10th child of 15. They were (preceded in death): Carra, Thelma, Dudley, Annie, Jessie, Hilda, Pearl, Cornelious, Easter, Virgetta, Beatrice, Lillie, Irene, and Louise.
Mamie was educated in the Fayette, Mississippi School system. At an early age Mamie professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at Forest Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Fayette, Mississippi.
Mamie was united in holy matrimony to Martin Gilchrist Jr, and they moved to Cleveland, Ohio. This union was blessed with three children, Theresa, Ethel, and Fred. Mamie also raised 3 baby boys Burlin, Christopher, and Jesse. She was a stepmother to Shirley and Dottie.
Mamie worked many years as a Health Care Provider. She enjoyed taking care of children, family members and friends. She was a mother and Grandmother figure to many. Mamie’s greatest job though, was as a homemaker. She enjoyed raising her six children and helping with the grandchildren.
Mamie loved to cook, travel, plan bus trips to different places for the adults, kids and teenagers, playing cards, and gardening. She was known to have the best garden with rows and rows of different fruits and vegetables.
Mamie was affectionately known as Mom, Momma, Madea, Sapphire, Beautiful, Old Lady, Granny and Grandma.
Mamie was a faithful and active member at both Starlight Baptist Church for many years and later joined Greater New Zion Baptist Church. She served as Superintendent of the Sunday School Department, was a Sunday School Teacher, served on the Mother Board, was a member of the choir, served as a member of the Missionary Ministry and organized Vacation Bible School.
Mamie was a faithful member of the Eastern Star Silver Queen Chapter #5 past Worthy Matron until her departure.
Mamie departed this life on December 15, 2021. Mamie leaves to cherish her memory daughters Theresa Gunn (Robert, deceased), Ethel Underwood (Larry), sons Fred Gilchrist, Burlin Thompson, Christopher Gilchrist (Latrell), Jesse Lake (Danielle), stepdaughters Shirley Woods (Jeremiah), Dottie Lanier (Henry), sisters-in-law Ruby Draper, Clare Gilchrist, Runnie Dawson, Ophelia Brown, brother-in-law Sam Hunter, Sr. 16 Grandchildren, 32 Great-Grandchildren. 20 Great Great-Grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
