The family of Mangia “Nana” Rebecca Holmes of Akron, OH., is deeply saddened to announce her passing on January 9, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born to the late Felix and Della Gupton in Verona, Pa. on December 9, 1922.
Mangia graduated from Verona High School in 1942 and met the love of her life Jerry Holmes. The two married on May 30, 1943, and shortly thereafter Jerry enlisted in the Army. In 1943 Mangia relocated to Washington D.C. and worked at the Veterans Administration office as a clerk for three years. In 1946 Mangia and Jerry decided to move to Akron, OH. where she later became a stay-at-home mom to six beautiful children. Twenty years later she enrolled at Hammel Actual Business School and Commencing in 1967, Mangia devoted twelve years to the Board of Education. In 1979 she was appointed as a Deputy Clerk in the office of Judge Barbuto, Probate Division, at the Summit County Court House, then transferred to the tax map department until her retirement in 1987.
Mangia was bestowed with a recognition from President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden in celebration of her 100th birthday.
Mangia was a philanthropist, a woman of God, a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. She embodied a compassionate spirit, dedicated herself to caring for others. She volunteered at the hospital and devoted eight years volunteering at the Department of Human Services.
Mangia was preceded in death by her parents Felix and Della Gupton, her brothers, Felix Jr, Albert, Curtis, sister Teresa Gupton, her husband Jerry Preston Holmes, son Jerry (Corky) Holmes, two daughters, Pamela Joyce Findley, Kristina Antoinette Stanch, and one granddaughter Pokima Nicole Holmes.
She is survived by her son Gregory (Knutokie) Holmes, two daughters Judith HaITison, Deborah (Deyon) Dobson, daughter-in-law Rhonda Holmes, grandchildren, DeHavilland Findley, Elizebeth McNeil, Kerry Holmes, Misty Harrison, Keesha (Ahmad) Grisby, Michael McPherson, Noelle Harrison, Ernest Jr., Leiha Dobson, Christian Stanch, Danielle Holmes, fifteen great grandchildren, and a host of Family and Friends.
