Margaret Lucile Cornelius, 95, peacefully passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, August 14, 2026 in Akron, Ohio.

Margaret was born on July 1,1931, to parents George and Nettie Hammett. From this union, there were nine children. Margaret was the last surviving member of her family. She attended Akron Public Schools, graduating from Garfield High School. An avid reader with a thirst for learning, in later years mom attended Nursing School, graduated and became a L.P.N. working at Akron City Hospital now known as Summa Health Systems. Margaret was married to James Cornelius from this union; they had four children. Momma enjoyed the simple things in life riding in the rain with her children, shoveling snow and sitting on the front porch with her husband.

Margaret and her husband James attended Evening Light Church of God where she served as a Deaconess, and he served as a Deacon. She also served and assisted in the daily works of the church. They traveled to many church revivals throughout the years under the leadership of Elder Dr. Keith Fuller and Pastor David Hargrave. Mom and Dad also loved to travel with the family. One special place they loved to visit was Canada. Some of her other favorite past times were game night with the family, working on jig saw puzzles, reading and cooking for family and friends. You couldn’t stop by 755 Carpenter Street without hearing “Wash your hands and go make you a plate”.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Julia Wertz, Louise Mosley, Annette Rumph and Marie Gulley; brothers, Edward Hammett, John Hammett, George Hammett, James Hammett; her beloved husband of 57 years, James Cornelius; granddaughter, DeAnna Dukes; grandson, Brandon Colter. She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Carolyn) Cornelius, Margie (Andre) Ferguson all of Akron, Ohio, Kevin (Madelyn) Abernathy-Cornelius of Alpharetta, GA, Yvonne Cornelius-Posey of Akron, OH, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.
