Martin Van Buren Craft, Jr. was born on May 4, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Martin Sr. and Malvryn Craft. He was the eldest son in their family of nine children. Martin graduated from East Technical High School in 1960.
Following his graduation, Martin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on June 20, 1960, and served honorably until his discharge in March of 1964. Upon returning to Cleveland, he met and married Shirley Finney. Their union was blessed with three children: Tracey D. Craft-Woods, Robin M. Craft-Johnson, and Rodney M. Craft. Shirley preceded Martin in death in 1998.
Martin dedicated 25 years of service to Dominion Gas Company as an IT professional. In addition to his career, he pursued higher education, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Cuyahoga Community College in 1975.
In 2003, at a church picnic during a cancer walkathon, Martin met Joan Napier. Their connection grew, and after she invited him to lunch, the rest became history. They were married on February 12, 2005, and shared a loving companionship. Martin found joy in attending performances at Playhouse Square, concerts, dinners, picnics, church events, and spending time with family.
When Martin entered a nursing home in 2021, Joan remained by his side, volunteering to lead craft classes for the residents to be closer to him. He continued to celebrate birthdays and holidays surrounded by loved ones.
On February 1, 2025, Martin fell ill, and on March 13, 2025, he peacefully went home to be with Jesus. He is now walking the streets of heaven, reunited with those who went before him.
Martin leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 20 years, Joan Craft; his children: Tracey D. Craft-Woods (Octavius Woods), Robin M. Craft-Johnson (William G. Johnson), and Rodney M. Craft (Kerry L. Craft); his sister, Blanche Robinson; his grandchildren: Octavius Woods II, Brianna Woods, Victoria A. Johnson, and Quinten N. Craft; his great-grandchildren: Khyce Woods and Khyrece Woods; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Almeda, Malvryn, June, Elinor, Donald, Willie, and Fred.
Martin’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will be forever cherished by those who knew him.
