Mary Francis Carter “Twiggy” was born on August 16, 1948 to Mr. Hardy and Mrs. Surloner Reynolds in Talladega, Alabama. After a lengthy illness and a courageous fight, Mary transitioned from this life peacefully on May 19, 2022.
Mary attended Talladega High School where she was an active member of the marching band as their Drum Majorette. After graduating in 1965, Mary began her journey of adulthood and moved to Cleveland, Ohio to be with her sisters: Julia, Dorothea and Ann. Mary was always into fashion and began modeling at a young age.
As Mary continued her modeling career she moved to Dayton, Ohio to lend a helping hand to her sister Lucy. It was during that time when she met Mr. Monroe Carter. In 1972, Mary and Monroe joined together in holy matrimony. It was through that union they had two beautiful sons Edwin Monroe, and Dana Mishun Carter.
Mary lived life to the fullest. You could always catch her out on the town enjoying life with family and friends. Mary loved her sisters and her brother very much and didn’t hesitate to extend her love and support whenever needed in whatever way. Mary was a beautiful person inside and out spending time with everyone she could, especially her grandchildren.
Mary loved being a grandmother. You would often find her in the kitchen baking their own special birthday cakes, throwing birthday parties, taking them shopping, and traveling with her. She took pride in passing down her sense of fashion to her granddaughters.
Mary is survived by her sons Edwin M. (Brooklynn Swanagan) Carter, of Owensboro, KY, and Dana M. Carter, of Dayton Ohio; special daughter Janora Y. Stroud of Dayton, OH; brother Hardy (Barbara) Reynolds Jr. of Talladega AL; sisters, Ann Mitchell and Julia Trumbo, both of Cleveland OH; grandchildren, (Edwin) Edwin E. Carter, Nikiyah L. Carter, Amir D. Carter-Swanagan, Unique D. Carter-Swanagan, Sincere D. Carter- Swanagan, Unity M. Carter-Swanagan, Truth E. Carter- Swanagan, (Dana) Jordan M. Carter, Darijuan M. Stroud, Jaderriqua R. Dillard, Myliah N. Dillard, Janiyah M. Carter, Ja’Den M. Carter; great-granddaughters, Promise S.U. Stroud, Chy’Lynn Jones. Mary had a host of special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, and nieces and nephews who preceded her in death. A very special friend and honorary sister Lynn Murdoch Of Cleveland, Ohio.
She is preceded in death by her parents Hardy and Surloner Reynolds Sr.; maternal grandparents, William and Lucy Keith; paternal grandparents, Elbert and Annie Reynolds; sisters, Catherine Harmon, Dorothy Hall and Lucy Martin.
