Mary McCall, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend, left us on March 19, 2024, at the age of 72. She was born on April 30, 1952, in Mobile, Alabama, to the late Frank and Josephine Johnson. At the tender age of three, Mary moved with her family to Ohio, where she would spend the rest of her life.
She was the proud mother of two children, Demetra and Dorell. Her children were among the greatest joys of her life.
In 1976, she married the love of her life, Henry McCall, and together they shared forty beautiful years filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their bond was an example of enduring love, and they navigated life’s journey together with unwavering support for each other.
Mary dedicated 27 years of her life to serving others at Ohio Mentor, a leading home- and community-based service provider. She brought several mentally challenged youths into her home to help each child understand their illness and develop coping skills that could help them succeed. Her compassion and dedication left a lasting impact on the children she cared for.
Mary was also a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, and her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She never hesitated to share the goodness of the Lord with others. She was a previous member of Unity Holiness Ministries. Even still, her love for the Lord was not bound by the walls of a church but spilled out into the world, touching lives with compassion, kindness, and grace.
Mary cherished time spent with family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. In her younger years, Mary enjoyed playing spades, often teaming up with her cousin, Brenda, for very spirited games. They were also known for grilling the best barbeque ribs!
A woman of many talents and interests, Mary had a passion for travel and exploring new cuisines. She had a flair for decorating and added her own unique touch of “bling-bling” to everything she adorned. Her quick wit, infectious laughter, and good listening skills made her a joy to be around, and she had a gift for lifting others up with her words of encouragement and wisdom.
Above all else, Mary treasured her role as a mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren brought immeasurable joy to her life, and she poured her love and wisdom into each precious moment shared with them.
During her illness, Mary was cared for with unwavering devotion by her son, Dorell, whose love and attentiveness were a testament to the deep bond they shared.
Mary McCall was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry McCall; her daughter, Demetra McCall; her parents, Frank and Josephine Johnson; and her brothers, Stanley Johnson and Larry Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memory: son, Dorell Johson; brother, Carl Williams; grandsons, Shontier, Ja’Myren, Dorell Jr., Damond, and DeAngelo; granddaughters, Destiny and Onyia; sixteen great-grandchildren; special cousin and best friend, Brenda Pledger, and a host of other family members and friends.
Though she may no longer walk among us, the memory of Mary McCall’s kindness, love, and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
