Mary Anne Gillespie was born on October 3, 1930, to the late James and Quita Herbert, being the fifth of six children. She grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she graduated from Garfield High School. Mary Ann spent her career serving others at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, from which she eventually retired.
Raised in a Christian home, Mary Ann’s faith was a central part of her life. She was an active member of St. Peter’s AME Zion Church in Cleveland, Ohio, where she contributed her time and talents to the Treasurer’s department. She also demonstrated her commitment to her community by working at election polls.
Mary Anne was admired for her stylish flair and her talent for interior design. She had a passion for gardening, which brought her much joy.
Mary Anne was cherished by her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Gillespie, and her siblings, Ada Lee Anderson, Pearl Kay Thompson, Nelly Gary, and James Herbert, Jr. She leaves behind her sister, Thelma Porter, and her son, Randolph Gillespie, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will all cherish her memory. The family would love to extend our love and appreciation to Addie Crable for all of your support for caring for Mary Ann. God has been good to us by bringing you into her life.
