In Loving Memory of Mattie Hunter
Mattie Hunter was born in 1929 in Lumpkin, Georgia, to the late Samuel Moore and Gussie Gilbert. One of two daughters, she shared an unbreakable bond with her beloved sister and best friend, Vivian “Spluck” Williams, who preceded her in death.
At a young age, Mattie moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she built a life rooted in love, faith, and resilience. She was a devoted mother to her only child, her beloved son, Sam—affectionately called “Ricky” by her—a name she spoke with warmth and pride. He was her heart, her joy, and her constant.
Though widowed early in life, Mattie moved forward with strength and determination, raising her son and crafting a full, beautiful life on her own terms. She took immense pride in being a grandmother and great-grandmother, cherishing every moment with her family. Whether through phone calls, shared meals, or passing down words of wisdom, she made sure her love was felt across generations.
Her love extended far beyond her immediate family, reaching a host of nieces and nephews, many of whom remained in Georgia. Despite the miles between them, she stayed closely connected—eagerly anticipating their regular phone calls and treasuring the care packages they sent her way.
Mattie dedicated over 50 years of her life to the healthcare industry, working tirelessly with compassion and commitment. Her strong work ethic and genuine care for others made her a valued presence wherever she served.
A pillar of her community, Mattie was known for hosting holiday meals that brought everyone together around food prepared with love. Her homemade caramel and coconut cakes were treasured family favorites. Backyard barbecues at her home were filled with laughter, music, and a deep sense of belonging that only she could create.
Strong, independent, and always real, Mattie was a “tell-it-like-it-is” woman who never minced words—but her honesty was always rooted in love and wisdom. Her faith in God was unwavering, and she often reminded others to “Trust in the Lord.” That faith carried her through life’s highs and lows with unshakable grace. She was a proud member of Jeremiah Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
In her later years, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures—scratching off lottery tickets, enjoying Lemonheads and Hershey’s chocolate, watching her soap operas (or her ‘stories,’ as she called them), and staying connected with the ones she loved. She delighted in trips to the casino, relishing the thrill of the games and the vibrant energy around her. Red Lobster was one of her favorite places to eat, especially when she could enjoy endless
shrimp in the company of family. She also loved gardening, generously sharing her harvest of collard greens, tomatoes, and other fresh vegetables with loved ones.
Blessed with a long and full life, Mattie proudly celebrated her final birthday as her “Sweet 95” as she called it. Her spirit remained joyful, grateful, and full of light until the very end. Though her presence will be deeply missed, we find peace in knowing she is now resting in the arms of her Savior.
We celebrate her life, her love, and her legacy—knowing exactly where to find her now: in a glorious place, surrounded by everlasting peace.
