Maurine Ross Stovall was born on November 13, 1926 in Marianna, Pennsylvania and departed this life on August 20, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was one of two children born to Oma and James Ross, both deceased, and sister of her beloved brother, James G. Ross, who preceded her in death in 1984. Most beloved by Maurine was her daughter, Gina Maureen, whom she adopted at 9 months of age. Gina was her daughter and her friend.
Maurine was raised in Winding Gulf, West Virginia. She completed her undergraduate work at Bluefield State College in Business Administration in 1949. Following graduation, she worked for two years at Delaware State College as Secretary to the Dean of College. Maurine came to Cleveland in 1951 and worked at the Navy Department in the General Accounting Office, researching documents for the government. Leaving office work to attend a retraining program in Reading at Kent State University, she started her teaching career in 1958.
Maurine received her Master’s Degree in Education from John Carroll University in 1974 which allowed her to work as a Master Classroom teacher. She worked in a regular classroom setting for fifteen years and as a Reading teacher for twenty-one years. Maurine always enjoyed teaching; she absolutely loved the children.
Maurine was a member of Iota Phi Lambda, a business sorority. For many decades she belonged to The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Xi Chapter, a teachers’ sorority, where she worked with the youth groups for thirteen years.
A member of St. Timothy Baptist Church for two years and then joining Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in 1955, Maurine was devoted to the church and her Lord. She taught the children and young adults of the church, and later adult classes. She served the Lord in working with the Progressive League, Missions Department, Vacation Bible School, and as a Deaconess.
Maurine also enjoyed walking for exercise, studying the Bible in preparation for teaching, traveling, and bowling.
Maurine leaves to mourn her daughter, Gina Curry (Calvin) of Twinsburg, Ohio; cousins Louis Dillard (Katherine) of Georgia, Pamela Davis of Maryland, Norman Matlock (Suzanne) of Pennsylvania, Vernita Hamilton of Colorado, Patricia Liggins of Pennsylvania, Louis Waller (Anne) of Pennsylvania, Lorraine Waller (Vince) of Illinois, Phyllis Waller of Pennsylvania, W.A. Wilkerson (Patricia) of Tennessee; special friends, Shirley Smith, Julia White, Etta B. Carter, Claudia M. I. Jackson and many more cousins and a host of friends.
