Melvin A. Ware Jr., age 62, passed away on July 28, 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. His journey on this earth was marked by passion, resilience, and a deep commitment to those he loved.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Melvin was the cherished son of Melvin Ware Sr. and Shirley Ware. From a young age, Melvin displayed a zest for life and a love for sports. He was an energetic child, enjoying football and baseball with neighborhood friends, and making his mark in the B-Buzz baseball league as a center fielder and All-Star.
Melvin’s sporting prowess extended to bowling, following in his father’s footsteps at Kinsman-Lee Lanes. And though talented in other sports, his greatest achievements were on the football field. At Benedictine High School and later St. Peter Chanel High School, Melvin distinguished himself as an All-State running back, setting numerous records, including the school record for yards gained in a single season, and leading his team to many victories.
Despite his early successes, Melvin faced challenges as his football career transitioned into his college years. Struggling to find direction, he embarked on a difficult journey of self-discovery and recovery. Clean and sober since the early 2000s, Melvin achieved 23 years of sobriety, a testament to his strength and determination. He channeled his experience into helping others as a drug and alcohol counselor at ORCA House and Stella Maris Addiction Treatment Center.
Melvin also worked tirelessly at UPS, where his dedication earned him a plaque and certificate for 20 years of distinguished service in 2022. Balancing two jobs was no easy feat, but Melvin’s resilience and work ethic saw him through. He remained a constant presence for his parents, always ensuring their well-being and taking care of any necessary repairs.
Melvin did the same for his grandchildren, making himself a consistent and loving presence in their lives, and making sure that any needs they had were well taken care of.
An avid Cleveland Browns fan with a rekindled passion for bowling, Melvin also enjoyed playing chess, science fiction, reading, and solving any and all crossword puzzles. His diverse interests and persistent spirit were integral to his character.
Melvin is survived by his father, Melvin Ware Sr.; mother, Shirley Ware; brother, Kevin Ware; son, Devaughn Rivers; grandson, Devaughn Rivers II; granddaughter, Jamie Rivers; daughter-in-law, JeMetria Rivers; and his wife, Antwoinette Ware.
Melvin’s legacy of strength, love, and perseverance will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched.
