David Dombkowski, USCG (Ret) left a message on January 1, 2024:
To the Howard family, Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of Melvin B, we met in Cape May, NJ USCG bootcamp company OSCAR-120. Over the years we would talk, email but never served at the same unit during our careers. Mel being from the Cleveland area and I from Erie, Pa shared a common bond with sports teams. My sons home from Columbus and we were talking about The Coast Guard, I showed him the bootcamp photo and people I served with. Just now learning of Mel’s passing. “Fair winds and Following Seas” Rest in Peace my brother. David

I was first introduced to Mel's cooking at USCG Sta St. Joe, MI in the 1990's and I was happy to serve with him at the federal Building (D9 offices) in the early 2000's. What a great cook, what a great friend, and an awesome human being. I was shocked to learn of his passing. My thoughts and prayers for comfort remembrance will be with the family.

My condolences and prayers to Monica and the rest of the Howard family. I met Melvin back in 1987 while stationed in Detroit when he was onboard USCGC Neah Bay. While most shipboard members wanted to hit the clubs/bars when the ship came in, not so for Melvin. He wanted to get to Akron as soon as possible so he could be with the love of his life Monica. On occasion when our schedules matched, we would make the ride together and share our Coast Guard stories. Melvin was a superb chef and often had some leftover goodies to share on our rides to Akron. He was highly respected and sought out from other members of the ship due to his maturity and leadership skills. We last crossed paths back in 2019 while attending a ship dedication ceremony in Cape May, NJ. Of course, as usual, Melvin had some great stories about his family and career assignments. The Coast Guard no doubt was good for Melvin but also, he was truly a shining jewel of a person and Officer while serving our country with Distinction and Honor. He has my highest respect and will be truly missed. Rest In Peace my good friend and shipmate we have the watch now, SALUTE!!!
