Mercedes Arellano de Young, affectionately known as “Lou,” passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on September 24, 1940, in Elota, Sinaloa, Mexico, Mercedes’ journey through life was marked by resilience, love, and a deep commitment to her family and community.
Preceded in death by her father, Cleofas Angulo Yuriar; her mother, Josefa Arellano Corrales; her sisters, Rosario Angulo Arellano, María Angulo Arellano, Manuela Angulo Arellano and Mélida Angulo Arellano; and her beloved son, Cinque Speights (CherryAnn). Mercedes’ legacy is carried forward by her surviving family members. She leaves behind her children, Sylvia Guadalupe Young, Horace Wesley Young IV, and Alma Rosa Valenzuela Arellano; her sister, Esther Angulo Arellano; and a large, loving extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mercedes immigrated to Laredo, Texas, and eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where she raised her children and grandchildren. Her home in the Larchmere area became a beacon of warmth and love, cherished by everyone in the neighborhood.
In her younger years, Mercedes worked for the Cleveland Society for the Blind, showcasing her dedication to helping others. Known for her generosity and care, she also looked after the neighborhood children until she was no longer able to do so. She had a profound love for Elvis Presley and had collections of his memorabilia. Her presence brought comfort and joy to many, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A devout believer, Mercedes held a deep devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe, often praying to her for guidance and strength. This faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with comfort and inspiration.
In her later years, Mercedes found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing stories, traditions, and her love for life. Her nurturing spirit and kind heart will be remembered forever.
