Michael Benjamin Williams was born on June 13, 1951, to Ernest B. Williams and Lula Mae Williams (Fisher) in East Cleveland, Ohio. As a young man, Michael accepted Christ and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cleveland. He attended East Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from Shaw High School in 1969. Michael exhibited a thirst for knowledge and was eager to seek higher education at Cleveland State University, graduating with a B.A. in Economics in 1978.
Over the years, Michael had several impactful careers that highlighted his capacity to lead. One of his endearing qualities was that he never knew a stranger. His charismatic personality and ability to become fast friends with others led to an early career in sales for Brown & Williamson tobacco company followed by serving as an educator at Cleveland Public Schools; and a Mortgage Loan Officer at D’Tail Mortgage company. He was most proud to serve his native city of East Cleveland for several years as City Councilman followed by an ambitious campaign for Mayor. He recently retired from the Social Security Administration where he enjoyed multifaceted roles within the Teleservice Center and as a Union Representative.
Michael was highly active throughout his adult life. He was an avid tennis player and member of a bowling league. He enjoyed roller-skating, hand dancing and line dancing, listening to the “oldies, but goodies” of R&B music, talk radio/politics, and appreciated fine dining. He was always open to trying new things and wanted to share those experiences with others. He was caring and compassionate, often giving freely of his time and resources. He understood and frequently expressed the importance of higher education and wanted the best life for his children and extended family. He loved and was proud of all his children and was especially excited about his first grandchild.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents Lula Mae and Ernest B. Williams; brother, Albert Williams; cousin, Ike Jenkins (Denise). He is survived by his children Tiffany Williams-Robinson (Fabyen), David Williams (Titia), Michaela Williams and Ashly Williams; grandson, Daniel Williams; brother, Ernest Williams; sister, Peggy Perkins (James-deceased); niece, LaTaunya Booker (Eric); nephew, James “JR” Perkins; great-niece, Diamond Shaw; special cousins, Barbara Shepard, Ivan Shepard, Samantha “Cherry” Brown, and a host of family and friends.
Michael lived a full life, was deeply loved, and will be sorely missed. We take comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and has transitioned to be with the Lord. While our hearts mourn his loss, we know that we will meet again soon.
