Michael “Mike” Smith, a man of boundless love, went home to glory on July 19, 2023, at the age of 71. Michael was a family man and leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy that touches the lives of so many. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 30, 1951, to Gladys Turner Smith and Fletcher Smith. Michael was the fifth of nine children: Rozena Farmer (Sherman Farmer), Fletcher “Butch” Smith (Elaine Smith), Betty Smith, Beverly Price (Harold Price), Queen Esther Smith, Herman “Jerry” Smith, Claude Richard Smith, and Mary Bertha Smith.
Michael graduated from East High School in 1970 and then went on to work for LTV Steel for over 30 years, retiring to do what he loved the most: spending time with his family.
At the age of 20, Michael married the love of his life, Denise Ford. Their love was a guiding force in Michael’s life, and he held onto it with unwavering devotion. Their love was blessed with the arrival of three beautiful daughters: Carman Vanessa, Michelle Lynn, and Kisha Diane, who brought immense joy and purpose into Michael’s life.
Later in life, Michael gained a son, Edward Gonzales. Ed’s dedication to supporting the family only deepened Michael’s admiration and love for him. Michael cherished the close bond they shared as family.
Over the years, Michael’s family grew. He adored his six grandchildren: Breanne Ramsey, Ashely Ramsey, Quiara Jackson, Diamond Ramsey, Jaylen Jackson, and Jayvon Jackson (Kiara Jackson). He showered them with love and imparted wisdom. Michael was overjoyed as he watched the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Josiah Ramsey, Levi Ramsey, Ava Morgan, Marquis Jackson, Liara Jackson, Nyla Rogers, Jeremiah Jackson, Makai Jackson, and Landon Morgan. He is also survived by his Uncle Dennis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his mother Gladys Turner Smith, father Fletcher Smith, brothers Claude Richard Smith, Fletcher Smith, Herman “Jerry” Smith, and sister Betty Smith. Also, niece Shelby Price and nephews Leron Smith and Earl Martin.
Today, on July 29, 2023, we gather to celebrate the Life of Michael and his unwavering love for the Holy Trinity, as he wholeheartedly accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Let us honor, cherish, and applaud the memory of our beloved father by embracing the love he exemplified, the hope he inspired, the determination he showed, and the generosity he freely shared.
We invite you all to strengthen the multitude of connections we have with one another, just as he did throughout his life. His artistic legacy, culinary prowess, and selfless commitment to put family first will forever shape our hearts and influence our life choices.
God’s love is eternal and true, and we find comfort in knowing that His Archangel Michael will protect it for all eternity.
