Minnie Jean Primes, the beloved matriarch of the Primes family, passed away on June 9, 2024. She was 87 years old. Minnie was born in Akron, Ohio to Mattie Batties and George Toomer. She graduated from the Old South High School in Akron. Shortly after graduation, she moved to New York City and lived there for two years. However, Akron called her home, and as fate would have it, she met her future husband, Marvin Primes, soon after returning. They married six months after meeting on December 26, 1959. Together they had eight children and later adopted seven more children.
Minnie had a beautiful smile. She loved to read and listen to her radio talk shows. She had a big heart that was devoted in service to others. She was a foster parent for over 50 years with the Summit County Children Services, who honored her with an award for her years of service. She was also a crossing guard for Summit County Public Schools for over forty years. For the last thirty plus years she was a carrier at the Akron Beacon Journal and the Westside Leader, and for the last twenty years, she worked as a home health aide with Heartfelt Care. She worked there until May 17, 2024. She selflessly gave her life to the care of others, especially her children. Minnie and Marvin sent all fifteen of their children to private school – St. Anthony Elementary School and Archbishop Hoban High School. They were committed to laying the groundwork for a better life for all of them.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jimmy Toomer, Ronald Toomer, Melvin Batties and sisters, Matlin and Summer Batties. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Marvin, the beloved patriarch of the Primes family, who passed away on November 23, 2001.
Minnie is survived by her 8 children, Robin Primes, Marvin Primes (Vicki), Marlon Primes (Kathi), Raymie Hooks (Donnie), Mychael Primes, Rhondalyn Primes, Myron Primes (Erin), and Reagan Primes, and later adopted children – Miles, Rasha, Malcolm, Matthew, Ralena, Mylin and Relorean Primes. Minnie has 10 grandchildren – Cory Primes, Shanequa Johnson, Dante Primes, Daisha Primes, Sergius Goins, Emanuel Primes, Markus Primes, Kayla Primes, Amare Okoroma and Cameron Okoroma. She is also survived by 21 great grandchildren and her beloved brothers, Donald (Roberta), Bobby, George (Sheryl) and Bill Toomer
