Mrs. Mona Marie Mitchell was born on October 13, 1939 in Yonkers, New York to John Henry Mitchell and Sylvira Logan. Mona was the second born of 5 children: Sister Sarah Debnam (Walter Debnam) Poconos, PA; Sister Cecelia White (fondly referred to as Baby Sis) (John White) Dublin, NC;. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Mitchell and also a brother, John Henry Mitchell (fondly referred to as Butch).
Mona graduated from Commerce High School in Yonkers, NY in 1955. Mona created for herself a standard of perfect attendance that began in her academic, and continued on into her professional career and was also evident in her commitment as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mona never missed a day of school or work and even received notable awards in excess of thirty years for perfect attendance.
On December 7, 1958, Mona married Leon Pannice Crawley in Yonkers, New York. Later they relocated to Ohio along with their two children, Doretha Butler (Mona) and Michael Ward (Leon). They were blessed with two more children, Leon Pannice Crawley Jr. and Terance LeLand Crawley (who preceded Mona in death). Mona began working for the Cleveland Water Department between 1967-1969. She held various positions including but not limited to meter reading, accounts payable, customer service and billing. She retired in the early 2000’s.
Mona began to study the bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and on February 8, 1992, dedicated her life and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In time, Mona applied to become a “regular pioneer,” one who spends an extensive amount of time each month engaged in teaching others about the bible. She had the privilege of attending “Pioneer School,” a special training class for regular pioneers on two separate occasions. Once in October of 2018, and again in April of 2021. Mona was a member of the Maple Heights Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses where she served since being baptized.
While Mona has a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren she has played an instrumental part in the lives of two of her grandsons, Tony C. Butler (Tyrianne) and Thierry Crawley (Edwards Airforce Base, California), of whom she raised from infancy and helped to grow into successful and productive young men. Mona had unwavering faith in the biblical promise that she will experience a resurrection to life in the near future and be able to live in a paradise earth with perfect health. She wanted to leave the promises contained in God’s Word, the bible, as a legacy for all that knew her so that she could look forward to seeing them again under better conditions.
