Nathaniel G. Summers, Sr. was born in Bluefield, W.Va. on September 20, 1944 to his parents Garfield Chambers and Lilly Summers McCray. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert Summers. Nathaniel, also known as Poochie, attended Genoa Jr. High, and graduated from Park Central High School.
Summers, (as he was affectionately known) first job was with Greyhound in North Carolina and then he moved to Newark, New Jersey where he worked at Ford Motor Co. for two years before moving to Cleveland. He worked at Republic Steel from 1969 until 2002 when it became LTV Steel and later Mittal Steel where he retired after 45 years in 2016.
Summers met his wife Hortense in 1972, and they married in June of 1981. They grew up together and lasted 51 blessed years. From this union, Nathaniel G. Summers, Jr. was born. Summers was also an affectionate father to Khalid Muhammad and Samuel Lamont King.
In his teenage years, Summers was a great musician who played lead guitar in bands in the Bluefield W.Va. area. He continued to play his guitar throughout his life for his and Hortenses’ enjoyment. He was also a great handyman who loved to beautify his home. He and Hortense worked in their yard, which is one of the most beautiful in their neighborhood.
Summers is survived by his loving wife Hortense, his sons Nathaniel G. Summers Jr. (Tiara), Khalid Muhammed (Randi), Samuel King (Tonya), and daughter Tisha and grandson Nicholas. His grandchildren Namarion, Jordan, and Teagan. Special granddaughters, Diamond, and Anna. Special best friend and sister-in-law Barbara Ann Dodson and Sister-in-law Judy Barron. The special sister in Christ Valerie Hamlet and Roger Hamlet. His only surviving brothers, Ronnie Summers and Della. Also, a special cousin Javelline Buford of Bluefield, W.Va. He leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
