Nellie M. Gordon 93, made her transition to glory December 18, 2017.
She was born July 14, 1924, the third of nine children, (five sisters and three brothers) to Ulysses D. and Rebecca Powers in Akron, Ohio.
At the age of seventeen, Nellie received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a life long member of the Robert Street Church of God (now Arlington Street Church of God) where she was a musician, Sunday school teacher, usher, steward of the Diaconate Board and recognized as Deaconess Emeritus for her many years of dedicated service.
Nellie graduated from Akron South High School and attended Akron University. In 1950 she married her wonderful husband Clephos Gordon. During their union of 43 years they were blessed with five children.
While raising her family, Nellie worked at B. F. Goodrich Company and continued her college studies at night. In 1970 she received her bachelor’s degree in education. She taught in Akron public schools for approximately 29 years retiring in 1994.
Nellie was a very caring person, volunteering for many agencies and organizations such as Bondage Breakers Inc. Prison Ministry, United Way, Red Cross, Breast Cancer Charities, American Cancer Society, and Women of the Church of God. Nellie had a gentle spirit mixed with her sense of humor. She was a lady of excellence, class, and sophistication. She will be greatly missed.
Nellie leaves to cherish her memory four children, Clyde E. Gordon and her daughter and caregiver Rebecca E. (Clifford) Clemons of Muncie Indiana, Richard D. (Brenda) Gordon and Samuel C. Gordon of Akron, Ohio; one sister, Beverly London of Atlanta, Georgia; and one brother, Clarence (Wanda) Powers of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ulysses and Rebecca Powers; husband Clephos Gordon; son Clarence L. Gordon; four sisters, Willa Mae White, Bernice Burke, Esterlyne Powers, Ida Marie Moye; and two brothers, Raymond Powers and Clyde Powers.
