Nona Mae (Shelton) Moore went home to be with the Lord on December 24, 2020. She was born on April 13, 1923, in Bessemer, Alabama; the first of ten children born to the late Rev. Alex and Alberta Shelton. By her family and close friends, she was called “Nonie.”
She went to Dunbar High School in Bessemer and moved to Akron, Ohio in her early twenties.
Nona accepted Christ as her personal savior at a young age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor I.T. Bradley. She later moved her membership to Providence Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Wheeler. She would always tell you to, “trust in the Lord and you must believe in Him.”
As a young woman, she did domestic work for a while and later retired from Sumner Nursing Home. At one time, she was an active member of an Eastern Start Order and the Ed Davis Senior Citizen Group. She loved to go fishing and bowling, taking care of her many flowers, watching television, and listening to music. She also loved to decorate her home and would change the décor very often. She loved clothes and shoes, always dressing fashionably.
Nona was the matriarch of five generations and the mother of six children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Moore; parents, Rev. Alex and Alberta Shelton; son, Alex Ware; granddaughter, Jennifer Walters; brothers, Alex Jr., Rev. James, Jesse, Robert, and Rev. Leroy Shelton; two sisters, Lucy and Lulabelle Shelton
Mourning her passing is her son, Charlie (Karen) Ware; daughters, Luberta Lindsey, Annie Walters, Alberta Thornton, and Lestine Williams; step-daughter, Sarah Norman; ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, nineteen great-great-grandchildren; brother, Albert (Linda) Shelton; sister, Emma Jean Hinkson; sisters-in-law, Delores Davis, Rosalie Ward, and Quilla Shelton; her Providence Church Family, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Blessed with ninety-seven years of life, she will truly be missed by those who knew her.
